Environmentally Friendly Ways to Deal with Outdated Computers

We live in a world that is becoming increasingly dependent on computer technology. No business, educational facility or home for that matter is complete without some form of computer technology nowadays in the form of either a traditional computer, laptop or mobile device. As we are all painfully aware the pace that technology keeps moving means many of the cutting edge devices from yesterday quickly become obsolete tomorrow. As production costs also come down these devices are increasingly more affordable meaning the turnover rate of technology is even greater.

computer recyclingBut what should one do when their device becomes outdated or breaks down and isn’t worth the cost of repair? Did you know more than 60 million computers are estimated to have been traded or thrown out in the past year alone according the the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). This represents a huge environmental challenge and one that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Safe disposal of computer equipment is becoming an increasingly important topic for discussion and one that’s likely to become more critical as time goes on. I’ll discuss some of the more environmentally friendly methods for disposing of computer equipment below.

Computer Recycling

Before you throw away your computer be aware that some if not many of the parts may still be of some use. Hard drives, disc drives, ram and graphics cards are very simple to remove and use again. It’s smart practice to remove these components prior to throwing out the computer as they may be of use in the future should you experience an equipment failure. It’s also smart to remove these items from an environmental perspective as many of these parts if not handled in the correct manner can contain toxins which can cause damage to the environment and are harmful to animals which may scavenge in your local sanitation area. In the case of the device simply becoming outdated for your own use, consider local schools in your area and even charities that may benefit from your device and put it too good use for years to come.

Safe Disposal of Computer Equipment

Most of us aren’t aware that computers are more than suitable for traditional recycling methods. While handling the actual components can be a little tricky and in most cases requires some experience many of the materials used such as: silicon, iron, aluminium and plastic can easily be recycled. The Government in 2005 introduced the National Computer Recycling Act which encourages computer recycling. Many manufacturers are also aware of the benefits of recycling and actively encourage their customers to send the device back when no longer required.

Rise of the Machines

Just in sheer volume alone the amount of landfill being taken up by dumped computer equipment is a real concern, especially when you consider that these numbers will only increase exponentially as technology continues to advance. Computer equipment that isn’t dumped is otherwise burnt which obviously represents a serious environmental implication at these numbers. Another potentially bigger problem is many of the components that make up a computer contain Lead and Mercury which are then released into the atmosphere.

So before you upgrade your computer or smart phone in the future consider your actions and how you will either recycle or dispose of your old device. Our environment depends on it.

The Benefits of Recycling

With the focus on global warming and the environment being largely undisputed nowadays as opposed to just a few short years ago when there was much debate about the validity of the greenhouse effect it’s of little wonder more and more people are asking what they can do to make a difference. While we may witness large scale protests on television concerning deforestation or read about technical advancements such as lower emission vehicles making a difference on a wider scale what can the average household do to contribute in a worthwhile manner?

Recycling starts in the home

One simple thing we can all do to make a difference is recycling. In fact if everyone in the world today recycled items such as paper and plastics more frequently we would be in a far better position to handle the impact of global warming. I have listed some practical advice below on the most effective methods of recycling. I encourage you to read the this article and make a real difference around your home.

Plastics

plastic-water-bottleThere are a number of options when it comes to recycling plastic. For one you can simply use the recycling bin provided by your local council to store plastic until collection day. You may also be unaware that many towns will provide a central pickup point for dumping plastics? You may even be able to trade your plastic waste for cash in some instances. Plastic items you can recycle include water bottles, soft drink bottles, fruit and biscuit containers. Plastic bags however in most cases cannot be recycled due to inefficiency when sorting through recycled materials, as all plastic bags have to be opened and checked for other contents that are not recyclable.

Paper

While it’s traditional newspapers are becoming less popular with the rise of handheld reading devices and the internet in general it’s still smart practice to reduce your paper waste around the home. Firstly try to think outside the square a little and find a use for old newspapers and scrap paper. One tip is to store your old newspapers to be used for packing delicate items when moving home. You should also try to be more efficient with paper and use both sides where practical. If all else fails recycle your paper items by using the recycle bin provided by your local council.

Electrical Items

One mans trash is another man’s treasure. While many of us may have heard this said over time it’s great advice when it comes to recycling electrical items no longer working or required.  Damaged electrical items in most cases can be repaired or re-purposed in some capacity around the home and most sanitation centers will accept broken electrical items for just this purpose. If however the item is beyond repair try to dump these items responsibly by removing batteries and separating the materials used to manufacture the item as much as possible and recycling any plastic or tin used.

Scraps and Leftover Food Items

Food scraps make great fertilizer if broken down and mixed with your soil. A compost is the most effective way of breaking these foods down into something more usable, this in turn helps reduce your need for purchasing fertilizers for your garden and greatly reduces the load on our sanitation centers.

The above recommendations may seem simple and in truth most of them are but as previously mentioned if everyone paid more attention to recycling we would be much better placed in relation to the environment. Remember recycling begins at home, you should also look for opportunities to recycle in the workplace and encourage others to do the same.

The Environmental Impact of Large Family Vehicles

4wd-on-beachThere’s no denying that larger family vehicles are becoming more and more popular as time goes on. While the size of the the typical modern family has decreased in numbers to some extent it would appear the size of the vehicle required has only increased. There are a number of contributing factors, for one larger vehicles are no longer considered the domain of those living in rural areas. It is very common to see slick looking 7 passenger SUVs and 4WD’s in suburbia and inner city areas, especially as larger cars are now more popular and are being designed to appeal to this market.

Manufacturers have met this demand by offering a number of models at vastly different price points that include features more commonly seen in smaller vehicles. But are all larger vehicles a blight on the environment? should environmentally aware readers be sticking with smaller lower emission vehicles?

While most of us have concerns about rising gas costs, the environmental impact and the affordability of a larger vehicle it must be argued that fuel efficiency has improved considerably among many of the more popular manufacturers and is offset by the introduction of many other features such as fuel injection and computer aided design. Computer aided  design cuts down on wind resistance and allows larger vehicles to be much more fuel efficient. It must also be argued that as there are many more diesel powered vehicles in this size available (diesel has less emissions than gas) most of us have greater choice when it comes to purchasing a larger vehicle.

Reasons why a large family vehicle can be an advantage

  • Larger vehicles are the perfect option for a big family. If you have 2-3 children or perhaps more you will find the extra room offered for passengers and luggage a distinct advantage. It also makes it far more convenient to travel with pets or to pack enough luggage for extended stays and driving holidays.
  • Versatility. Many larger vehicles such as 4WD’s include adjustable seats that can be folded to make sufficient space when required. With some vehicles having the capacity to accommodate 7 to 8 people at any one time, having the ability to fold these seats when not being used allows much greater versatility when making travel arrangements.
  • Fuel Efficiency. While most of us are aware larger vehicles are not as fuel efficient due to the increases weight of the vehicle it must be argued that in direct comparison to RV’s and mini vans they are much more fuel efficient.
  • Larger vehicles such as 4WD’s and SUV’s are equipped to take on most roads regardless of the conditions.
  • Passenger Safety. Another benefits of having a large family vehicle is the increased safety options. Features such as traction control, highly developed braking systems, multiple airbags, reverse sensors and crash detection systems are of great benefit and provide added assurance to the driver particularly if travelling with a large family.

With these advancements in mind there has never been a better time to contemplate purchasing a larger vehicle. If you have a growing family, or if you have a hobby that requires extra room when travelling a larger vehicle can save you a great deal of trouble and also offer the comforts many of us enjoy in smaller vehicles.

Certified Nursing Assistant Roles and Responsibilities

A certified nursing assistant (CNA) works under the guidance of a registered nurse (RN) in the provision of medical care to patients.

The responsibilities of a CNA vary greatly based on the location they perform their duties. Some of the more common areas of practice include:

  • Daycare adult centers
  • Hospital
  • In the patient’s home
  • Aged care facilities
  • Assisted living facilities

A small percentage of CNA’s will be working while undertaking training to become a registered nurse themselves.

Day to Day Duties of a CNA

patient mobilityIn most occasions, the nursing assistant will serve as the bridge between the registered nurse and the patient and perform their duties as directed by the registered nurse (RN). These duties will often include tasks such as helping the patient bathe, changing dressing, observing and recording patient information and assisting patients with common tasks around the home.

Due to legal and liability issues, assistants are prevented from performing many procedures undertaken by the RN, however the opportunity to observe these procedures in itself represents a great opportunity for those undertaking on the job training or undertaking part time study to advance their careers.

CNA’s are given the task of administering treatments and medications such as enemas, massage and patient transfers among others as instructed by a qualified nurse. They are also tasked with cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms, patient rooms and examination rooms. They are also required to observe and document patients’ behaviors, physical symptoms and complaints and report them to nurses. They may also be asked to apply clean dressings, support bandages, stockings and slings under the directions of a nurse.

Depending on the area of employment the workload of an assistant nurse can be overwhelming and fast paced (particularly if working in a hospital environment) but the biggest motivating factor is the ability to assist registered nurses in administering medical needs and maintaining human contact with patients.

How to become a certified nursing assistant

Training for the role of a CNA is offered by community colleges, medical institutions and the Red Cross. As previously mentioned it is also possible to find institutions that offer on the job training such as hospitals but it should be noted this is far less common.

Employment

For the most part it isn’t difficult to find employment as a nursing assistant. This is largely due to there being a high turnover rate of staff. This comes down to a number of reasons such as stress and the demands placed upon an employee in a hospital environment.  It is also due to the fact that many CNA’s are transitioning from the role of a CNA to that of an RN or similar role within the medical industry.

To progress from a nursing assistant role to that of an RN most CNA’s will undergo part time training which allows them to study while working. There are many associate degrees and diploma programs offered to CNA’s.

Most people view certified nursing assistants, psychiatric aides, orderlies and medical assistants as one specific group. Although they share some responsibilities they each have their own distinctive roles and the training for each while having some similarities is essentially quite different.

What to Expect from a Military Surplus Auction

You have probably seen military surplus stores before, especially if you live in an area with military barracks close by. They really are fascinating places to visit but did you know rather than visiting the store in person you can actually bid on military surplus items from your own home via military surplus auctions held online.

How Does it Work

The concept is really quite simple, the military is constantly upgrading or turning over equipment no longer required which in turn creates a surplus of military equipment no longer in use. This  equipment is then made available to the public at greatly reduced prices through military surplus stores and auctions, both offline and online.

What Can Be Found at a Military Surplus Auction

military backpack

Ammunition Pouch

Now before you head out to your nearest military surplus store or look online for an auction taking place you should be aware of the type of items made available to the public. For starters you wont find weapons sold via an online auction, in fact guns, grenades and other weapons are rarely auctioned and if available at all will only be found at a live auction under supervision.

What you will find however are items such as military clothing and footwear, camping equipment such as tents, sleeping bags and hammocks, tools such as digging implements and axes, kitchen equipment, assorted equipment such as compasses and storage devices and of course military backpacks and water bottles which have proven to be very popular.

Those on the lookout for rare military memorabilia will have more success attending a live auction as opposed to bidding online. However bear in mind memorabilia items don’t tend to make up a large part what is available to the public.

Military Vehicles

Surprisingly military vehicles are also auctioned off on a regular basis and as many as 10,000 ex military vehicles are auctioned per year. These vehicles include jeeps, motorcycles, even helicopters and hovercraft! So as you can see there is literally something for everyone.

What Condition are the Items in?

Be aware that most of the items available to purchase will have been used previously and are definitely considered second hand. This isn’t to say the items are not in good working condition, in fact many of the more popular items available will be perfectly functional, in good condition and are really only available for sale because the items have been upgraded over time for military use.

As you are no doubt aware the military are constantly advancing their equipment and taking advantage of newer technology. While most of us probably have visions of advanced weapon technology this is true even for relatively simple items such as clothing and camping equipment. This means there is a high turnover of equipment which in turn means great value can be had from military surplus auctions.

So next time you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary consider a military surplus auction. You really will find just about anything and at a greatly reduced price.
